Bextan’s birth was as smooth as they come! Other than the 2 things she wished wouldn’t happen (her water breaking while’s she’s teaching @ school & snow while she’s delivering), Lauren couldn’t have asked for a better birth. Her water broke around 2pm on the 12th, which really surprised her because she was not having any signs on labor up until that point. Plus she still had 8 days until her due date! She went to the hospital shortly after to get checked and they went ahead and admitted her. Progress was fairly slow up until the wee hours of the night when she decided to soak in the tub for awhile. That’s when things quickly turned around and she got her epidural just in time. Her husband Craig texted me around 3:30am when she was 8 cm and I made my way to the hospital…thankfully we didn’t get much snow and the roads weren’t as bad as the weathermen were anticipating. When I arrived, Lauren & Craig were just resting and listening to Harry Potter books on tape. Lauren was totally calm and was cracking me up with all of her blunt comments 🙂 She kept apologizing to her nurse (who was awesome by the way!) every time she had to check her, turn her, or do anything that seemed inconvenient to Lauren.
Then by about 4:50am, she was 10cm and ready to push. Although she was still totally calm, reality set in a little for Lauren & Craig as they realized that they would be holding their son in their arms VERY SOON! Lauren took comfort in the fact that her body did everything it was supposed to up until that point, and she continued to trust her body as she pushed. She only had to push off and on for about an hour before cute little Bextan made his grand appearance. After their first few moments together, Bextan was cleaned up and got to spend some quality time with daddy until Lauren was ready to get him back and breastfeed. It was so precious witnessing those first reactions between father & son (and Bex looks just like his daddy in my opinion). Lauren was practically like an old pro and got Bex to latch right away which totally made her day. They spent the rest of the time that I was there just cuddling & feeding and basking in the aftermath of a perfect birth with their perfect son 🙂
