….and by that I mean,WE are sooo in Popular Photography Magazine!
This one is for all of our teachers who taught and encouraged us over the years. “I’m somebody now” kind of a moment. HOLLERRR!
It’s legit. We saw it at Krogers.
I always joked with my high school art teacher that I’d be famous one day. While I was truly joking, he really believed something big was in my future. (I also used to joke that my birthday was a national holiday. Then on my 18th birthday 9/11 happened. I should take myself more seriously.) While this isn’t really a huge deal, it IS kind of a big deal in the photo world. Pop Photo was my first ever subscription in my name. I never had to subscribe to TEEN magazine because my sisters would tend to throw it at me mid fight, so once we were done screaming at each other I was all “Sweet! This issue has Leonardo DiCaprio on the cover. I can’t wait to cut out every image and tack his face to my bedroom walls.” Other than drooling over teenage heart throbs, I never cared about magazines. BUT I have always flipped through them just to look at fantastical pictures and seeing how they did it. Captions have always been my preferred reading vs novels.
When we were contacted back in March (look closely at the image, that baby was born in April 😉 and Kelly is 8 months pregs!) to be featured, we didn’t know how to handle it. Pop Photo is one of the biggest selling photo mags on the rack. Holy sh*t. They picked us? What a compliment! Guess we’re on to something with this business of ours. We’ll keep shooting, as long as you all keep getting knocked up! Deal?
Thanks to the Yusko’s for being our models! We had to stage a homebirth for the article since we weren’t quite sure how to make a portrait of the two of us at an actual birth, especially since only one of us shoots at a time. “While you breathe through that contraction, don’t mind us. Kelly and my husband are going to pop in so we can grab 25 mock up shots for the editor of this magazine. It’ll be real quick. Just don’t start pushing til I’m ready to start shooting again. And could you try and face the camera too, so you can tell what is going on in the background? That’d be greeeeat.” Clearly, staging a homebirth was the only option. Also, thanks a.Pace for the shot. Double high five to our college professor, two of your students are in the magazine!
Thanks for following along and loving birth with us! We are truly honored and blessed to be nationally recognized like this. We work so hard seven days a week and it’s nice to know someone has noticed. It’s also a glorious feeling to be doing something for a living that you are so passionate about. AND getting paid for it. Winning! ::fist punch:: But I don’t really know what we are supposed to do with the magazine from here? Maybe we should cut out, autograph and frame the article for everyone for Christmas?
Oh! There is another local feature coming up that will be on air sometime in the next month or two. I just know you can’t wait to see our faces on TV. Ewww. I’ll let you know when that happens, then I’ll go hide under a blanket in the corner because good Lord I hate my voice and myself in video. GAH!
Peace, Melanie and Kelly.
