a beautiful beginning: samuel isaac’s birth story.

Well despite Heather’s best efforts which included lots of last minute house remodeling, cleaning, walks, trips to Kings Island at 40+ weeks, and the flu, this baby boy was as content as could be staying inside mama ๐Ÿ™‚ Heather had been 3cm for weeks with no progress, so she scheduled her induction for a week past her due date on 7.31.15.

She and Eric got to the hospital at 5:45am that morning and the induction was started by 6:30am. Meanwhile I was busy getting my kids over to my moms and I didn’t hear anything for the next 2 hours, which was a relief to me because I was stressing about having to cross the river multiple times that morning during rush hour traffic. Once I got to my moms I checked in and she had just gotten her epidural around 8:45am, but hadn’t been checked. At 9:45am she texted and said she was only 4cm and things were moving slowly. She didn’t want me to come yet because there was nothing going on other than them trying to keep their eyes open.

Then at 10:30am, she was 6cm and I was on my way to the hospital. 10:55am a text came through saying she was getting ready to push as I’m crossing the river. What?!? 6cm to pushing in 25 minutes!! Really 4cm to pushing in just over an hour! Needless to say I missed the actual birth by a few minutes and I was so bummed. Everyone was shocked that it happened that fast, and it just goes to show how every birth is SO different and unpredictable.

Samuel was greeted by both sets of grandparents along with big brother Eli and big sister Isabel. He is already so loved and makes the perfect addition to their family ๐Ÿ™‚ Since I don’t have any actual labor & delivery shots, we opted for a slightly different blog post rather than the slideshow. Enjoy and congrats to the Barrett Family!!

a beautiful beginning: eliza nicole’s birth story.

I am so honored and excited to once again be a part of and share pictures of my good friend’s birth of their 4th child. A little over 2 years ago, I shared a brief summary of Josh & Brooke’s fertility battle and the miracle of their son Dominic’s birth after the tragic loss of their twins during the middle of her second trimester. This birth was nothing short of a second miracle, and was made a just little sweeter by the surprise of baby GIRL this time ๐Ÿ™‚

Thankfully, Brooke got pregnant quicker & easier this time around, and had a fairly good pregnancy despite all of the normal pregnancy sickness and annoyances. They went for their 20 week ultrasound intending to find out the gender, but the baby would not cooperate, so they decided to just leave the gender a surprise. The baby was perfectly healthy and that was all that really all that mattered. Plus, they are in between houses right now and do not have a nursery to decorate anyway.

As the end drew closer, Brooke got increasingly more uncomfortable as the doctors were guessing this baby could be up to 11 lbs – which would have been a whole bigger than Dominic! They went ahead and scheduled her c-section at 39 weeks, and on July 8th at 7:32am Josh & Brooke welcomed their sweet baby girl – Eliza Nicole – and although she was still a chunker at 9.10lbs, 21″, she was nowhere near as big as the doctors were expecting. She actually ended up being a few ounces smaller than her big brother.

Eliza was greeted right away by both sides of the family just like Dom was, and everyone was so excited for a little girl this time. Brooke and her sisters immediately got out the baby name books and everyone started throwing out name suggestions. Later that day, Brooke decided on the name she had picked out for Dom if he was a girl because it has deep family roots all the way back to her great grandmother. I think it fits her perfectly ๐Ÿ™‚ Congratulations to Josh, Brooke, big Brother Dom and their families!!

a beautiful beginning: olivia rose’s birth story.

Lauren’sย  birth was extra fun for me to shoot because it turns out that we have very similar stories…both have 2 boys (ages 5 & 3) and are expecting little girls, and both of us have had similar struggles with pregnancy losses and challenges. She booked us back in February, but we planned to meet up for a consult once Melanie was off of maternity leave in May. Well May came and went and our schedules were crazy as usual, so no consult happened then. Things got interesting for Lauren mid-June as she was put on bed rest upon finding out she was already 4cm dilated and 50% effaced at only 34 weeks! Thankfully we were able to work it out and met a week later after one of my shoots.

We both thought she would deliver super early based on how far dilated she was so early, but she made it to 36 weeks and was taken off of bed rest at that point. Then 37, 38 weeks and still no changes! Finally her doctor scheduled an induction date at 39 weeks on July 18th if she didn’t deliver before then. Sure enough, baby girl was super comfy and waited to come until the scheduled induction.

Lauren & Jonathan got to Good Sam around 8:45am the morning of the 18th and she had her water broken by 10am. I got there at 10:30am, and the nurse started pitocin shortly after. It only took about 15 minutes for the pit to kick in and she had a couple strong contractions and was luckily able to get her epidural shortly after that. It was a fairly relaxing labor after that as she let her body do what it was made to do. By 2:15pm, she was feeling pressure and the nurse checked her and basically saw the baby crowning! Everyone finished gowning up and Lauren’s mom guessed the baby would be here at 2:37pm. I personally thought it would take a bit longer than that, but literally 2 pushes later and sweet Olivia Rose was born at 2:33pm!! She weighed in 7.12 lbs and was 22″ long.

Lauren & Jonathan enjoyed quality skin-to-skin time with with Olivia as they waited for big brothers to arrive. Once they got there, they weren’t quite sure what to think (as to be expected for boys their age), and it turned out that their 3 year old was more interested in Olivia at first than their 5 year old. Lauren thought for sure it would be the opposite. I think they were just excited to go home with grandma & grandpa and have Olivia’s birthday cake ๐Ÿ˜‰ Congrats to all of you and so happy for you guys and your newest, prettiest addition ๐Ÿ™‚
